Adapting Zero Trust Principles to Operational Technology

Zero trust (ZT) offers a modern, adaptive approach to cybersecurity by eliminating implicit trust and continuously validating access based on identity, context, and risk. ZT principles assume a breach has already occurred and are designed to limit threat actor movement and potential damage.

For operational technology (OT), applying ZT requires careful consideration because OT systems interact with the physical environment and are constrained by availability and safety requirements, as well as legacy technology with long lifespans. The blanket application of traditional information technology (IT)-focused ZT capabilities to OT is neither reasonable nor feasible and requires continuous collaboration between OT engineers, IT architects, and cybersecurity professionals. This collaboration should include clear communication channels, joint development of policies and controls, and a shared understanding of both mission objectives and technical limitations.

  • Feds get 3 days to patch N-able God mode flaw under active exploit

    August 4, 2026

The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has added an exploited N-able vulnerability to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, giving federal agencies three days to patch a flaw that could let attackers reach managed service provider (MSP) customers. Attackers exploiting the flaw can gain “full administrative access to an N-central console,” Tracked as CVE-2026-18577 (8.2 ...

  • INTERPOL report finds AI linked to more than half of cybercrime in Africa

    August 3, 2026

Artificial intelligence is enabling 55 per cent of reported cybercrimes across Africa making attacks faster, more scalable, and increasingly difficult for victims and platforms to detect, according to INTERPOL’s African Cyberthreat Assessment Report 2026. With more than 1.1 billion mobile subscribers recorded in 2025, Africa’s digital transformation is expanding rapidly. However, cybercrime legislation is fragmented and AI readiness ...

  • FBI: Alert to Countries, Companies, and Other Entities Regarding North Korean IT Workers

    July 31, 2026

North Korea relies upon a network of skilled Information Technology (IT) workers, deployed within and outside of North Korea, to obtain false identities and remotely earn income to fund North Korea’s unlawful nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs. North Korean IT workers impersonate nationals of other countries to obtain work and income through online platforms operated ...

  • Network Anomaly Detection in KATA

    July 31, 2026

Once the attacker has breached the corporate network, subsequent stages of the attack often involve leveraging standard domain infrastructure protocols: using Kerberos, running DNS queries, accessing internal services, opening network shares, and other common networking actions. Because this activity is virtually indistinguishable from legitimate network traffic, it is extremely difficult to detect it with traditional ...

  • The Next Evolution of MDR: Preemptive Defense and Agentic Investigation

    July 28, 2026

For years, security operations followed a familiar sequence: detect suspicious activity, investigate what happened, and respond before it caused significant harm. That model developed in a threat landscape where defenders had considerably more time to establish the facts and decide what to do next. In 2019, the average data breach took 206 days to identify ...

  • Three Steps to the Terminal: A Siemens ROX II Zero-Day Trilogy

    July 17, 2026

Palo Alto Unit 42 conducted this research in close partnership with Siemens, reflecting their shared commitment to advancing the security and resilience of critical infrastructure. This report details a critical, chained exploit comprising three zero-day vulnerabilities (CVE-2025-40948, CVE-2025-40947, and CVE-2025-40949) discovered in Siemens ROX II operational technology (OT) switches. Successful exploitation of this chain would allow ...
