Australia is implementing comprehensive internet age verification and ID check requirements as part of a major overhaul of online safety regulation.
By December 27, 2025, major platforms including Google and Microsoft must implement age verification checks on their search engines for all logged-in Australian users, facing potential fines of up to AU $50 million per breach for non-compliance. The regulations mirror similar measures in the UK and EU, requiring users to verify their age through methods such as selfie verification or photo ID to access adult or harmful content. The initiative is part of Australia’s broader digital safety framework, which includes the rollout of a Digital ID system incorporating facial recognition and online identity verification.
