GitLab CI/CD Regex Integer Overflow (CVE-2026-97229)

On October 12, 2026, GitLab released 19.4.2, 19.3.5, and 19.2.8 to fix CVE-2026-97229, an integer overflow in its CI/CD regular-expression handling. The issue was reported through HackerOne by joaxcar. GitLab assigned it a CVSS score of 10.0 and described possible code execution by an unauthenticated user.

The advisory states that CVE-2026-97229 affects GitLab CE and EE from 19.2 before 19.2.8, 19.3 before 19.3.5, and 19.4 before 19.4.2. GitLab says all deployment types are affected unless stated otherwise. GitLab.com was patched before disclosure, and Dedicated customers do not need to act.

Rapid7 researchers developed an end-to-end PoC that reliably runs arbitrary commands as GitLab’s git operating-system account on the official Linux amd64 gitlab/gitlab-ce:19.4.1-ce.0 image with ASLR enabled. GitLab’s release notes do not report exploitation in the wild occurring at the time of disclosure.

More often than not, the publication of proof-of-concept (PoC) code for a security flaw, especially a zero-day, has led to the quick adoption of a vulnerability by threat actors who usually start attacks within hours or days, and don’t give end-users enough time to patch impacted systems. There has been a debate about this issue, especially ...

  • Patched WinRAR Bug Still Under Active Attack – Thanks to No Auto-Updates

    March 15, 2019

Various cyber criminal groups and individual hackers are still exploiting a recently patched critical code execution vulnerability in WinRAR, a popular Windows file compression application with 500 million users worldwide. Why? Because the WinRAR software doesn’t have an auto-update feature, which, unfortunately, leaves millions of its users vulnerable to cyber attacks. The critical vulnerability (CVE-2018-20250) that was patched ...
