GitLab CI/CD Regex Integer Overflow (CVE-2026-97229)

On October 12, 2026, GitLab released 19.4.2, 19.3.5, and 19.2.8 to fix CVE-2026-97229, an integer overflow in its CI/CD regular-expression handling. The issue was reported through HackerOne by joaxcar. GitLab assigned it a CVSS score of 10.0 and described possible code execution by an unauthenticated user.

The advisory states that CVE-2026-97229 affects GitLab CE and EE from 19.2 before 19.2.8, 19.3 before 19.3.5, and 19.4 before 19.4.2. GitLab says all deployment types are affected unless stated otherwise. GitLab.com was patched before disclosure, and Dedicated customers do not need to act.

Rapid7 researchers developed an end-to-end PoC that reliably runs arbitrary commands as GitLab’s git operating-system account on the official Linux amd64 gitlab/gitlab-ce:19.4.1-ce.0 image with ASLR enabled. GitLab’s release notes do not report exploitation in the wild occurring at the time of disclosure.

  • We need to talk about mathematical backdoors in encryption algorithms

    December 15, 2017

Security researchers regularly set out to find implementation problems in cryptographic algorithms, but not enough effort is going towards the search for mathematical backdoors, two cryptography professors have argued. Governments and intelligence agencies strive to control and bypass or circumvent cryptographic protection of data and communications. Backdooring encryption algorithms is considered as the best way to ...

A vulnerability called ROBOT, first identified in 1998, has resurfaced. Impacted are leading websites ranging from Facebook to Paypal, which are vulnerable to attackers that could decrypt encrypted data and sign communications using the sites’ own private encryption key. The vulnerability is found in the transport layer security protocol used for Web encryption. A successful attack could ...

  • Why bother cracking PCs? Spot o’ malware on PLCs… Done. Industrial control network pwned

    December 12, 2017

Security researchers have demonstrated a new technique for hacking air-gapped industrial control system networks, and hope their work will encourage the development of more robust defences for SCADA-based systems. Air-gapped industrial networks are thought to be difficult if not impossible to hack partly because they are isolated from the internet and corporate IT networks. However, in ...

Leading US and UK-based banks have patched a flaw found in their Android and iOS mobile apps that allowed adversaries to conduct man-in-the-middle attacks to steal customer credentials and view and manipulate network traffic. According to researchers at the School of Computer Science at the University of Birmingham that found the flaw, the vulnerability impacted nine apps belonging ...

  • RSA coughs to critical-rated bug in its authentication SDK

    December 3, 2017

RSA developers and admins have been given two critical-level authentication bugs to patch. For the sysadmin, the issue struck RSA’s software providing Web-based authentication for Apache. CVE-2017-14377 is an authentication bypass that existed because of an “input validation flaw in RSA Authentication Agent for Web for Apache Web Server”. If the authentication agent is configured to use UDP there’s ...
